Little did I know that through its snail’s pace, you get to appreciate the genius of the film’s director, he wants you to immerse yourself in the subtleties of the film. The movie plays out very slowly, really testing the audience’s patience, it did for me and at times, you just want to either fast forward to the good parts or to just stop watching. It gets tiring after a while, but I think this is a great tactic by TI West, because he doesn’t want you to wait for the scares, he wants to You spend half the time trying to figure out when the fun and wacky portion ends and when the scares start. The “chapter style” where the film is broken down into “acts” as if on a play, really works because it gives you the feeling of impending doom. The movie is cleverly broken down into chapters, with each chapter a narrative of what the next few scenes would contain. Told in a very unique way, The Innkeepers uses subtlety to its fullest extent. This is a journey around a haunted house. We are treated to its history and how it came to be so. The Yankee Pedlar Inn is the main character of this film. Instead of giving main characters, protagonists, antagonists and such, it is basically centring the film around an inanimate object, more specifically, a home. The Yin and Yang characters gives the movie a lot more depth and gives us a concoction that is very tasty and leaves you asking for more. Luke, feels like the steady presence to balance Claire in the film, lest we become too fed up with her antics.

Claire giving us most of the laughs in the film with her comic expressions and bumbling foolishness. Together, they play their parts to the fullest extent. Pat Healey, who plays Luke is a stoic, no nonsense nerd who runs a website trying to chronicle the hotel’s dark history. Sara Paxton who plays Claire in this film, is a young, bubbly and cheerful college drop-out with a severe case of asthma. Here they experience a weekend wherein they got more than what they bargained for.

Both are ghost enthusiasts who are desperately trying to capture the apparition of Madeline O’ Malley, a bride that hanged herself in the very same hotel when her husband left her during their honeymoon. On the last legs of its once glorious existence, the Yankee Pedlar inn is run by two employees, Claire and Luke. They say the journey is the best part of every destination, and in TI West’s The Innkeeper’s this certainly holds true.
